Construction work began on the site in November 2004. By April 2005 the contractor, WH Brown Construction had completed the car park and the building structure had started to take shape.
By July 2005 one could get a very good impression of the internal layout. The main sports hall – now named The Allardice Games Hall – enjoys the benefit of natural light and has a bright spacious feel. The viewing gallery provides an excellent impression of the whole hall. By Christmas 2005 internal work and decorating was largely completed and the indications were that the Centre would be handed over to the School ahead of schedule.
It is a credit to the design that, despite its size and by working with the natural contours of the area, the building has no significant impact on the surrounding properties. It is only when entering the building that one gets a true impression of the immensity of the facility.
In February 2006 WH Brown Construction handed over the new building to the School. This was four months early and the cost fell slightly below the budget figure for the project. This result is a reflection of the excellent work undertaken by the architects Wellwood Leslie, the main contractors WH Brown Construction (Dundee) Ltd, and the whole project team.
